How does a water softener work?

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange. Inside the unit is a tank of resin beads that carry sodium ions. When hard water flows through the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions (which cause hardness) are attracted to the beads and swap places with the sodium ions. The water that comes out is soft — free of the minerals that cause limescale. Periodically, the softener regenerates by flushing a brine (salt water) solution through the resin to recharge it, washing the trapped minerals down the drain.
